How to Fix “Malwarebytes Web Protection Won’t Turn on” Error

Malwarebytes Web Protection Won’t Turn on

Malwarebytes is one of the antivirus tools and it was firstly launched in January 2006. Malwarebytes can find and remove malware such as viruses, spyware, adware, Trojan, and worms, which is in both editions — free and paid edition.

It provides your computer with many great features. But now, there is an issue — Malwarebytes Web Protection won’t turn on. Web Protection is important for your computer because the malware software’s main distributor is the Internet. Thus, if there is a problem with your Web Protection setting, you should fix it as soon as possible.

Here are two possible reasons for Malwarebytes Web Protection off. Malwarebytes released a firmware update to its program in June 2018, which caused some errors for many people, including the issue — Malwarebytes Web Protection won’t turn on. Another reason is that you have downloaded another program that is in conflict with Malwarebytes.

Then, I will give you the easiest tricks to fix the “Malwarebytes real-time Web Protection won’t t turn on” error.

How to Fix “Malwarebytes Web Protection Won’t Turn on” Error

Method 1: Clean Reinstall Malwarebytes

The first method is to clean reinstall Malwarebytes. You can follow the tutorial below:

Step 1: Press the Windows Key + R key at the same time to open the Run dialog box. Then type regedit and click OK to open Registry Editor.

Step 2: Use the locations below to retrieve your ID and Key, depending on your PC’s architecture:

Windows x86 32-Bit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Windows x64 64-Bit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Step 3: You can proceed with the removal process after you have retrieved your ID and Key.

If you want to continue using your Premium edition, you should follow the next steps.

Step 4: Open MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware), navigate to My Account and click Deactivate. Open Settings, then click Advanced Settings and uncheck Enable self-protection module.

Step 5: Close the program and download the mbam-clean.exe tool from Malwarebytes’ official site. Then close all of the open programs and disable your antivirus temporarily.

Step 6: Run the mbam-clean.exe tool and follow the on-screen instructions, then you should reboot your computer.

Step 7: Download the latest version of MBAM from their official site and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.

Step 9: Copy and paste the ID & Key you retrieved from your registry in the dialog box. Then your license will be activated automatically.

Then you can check to see if the “Malwarebytes Web Protection won’t start” has been fixed. If it has not been fixed, you can try the second method.

Method 2: Re-Run the Malwarebytes Program

This method may be not successful for everyone who encounters this problem, but you can have a try. It will only take a minute and it won’t make any significant changes to your computer. Here are the steps:

Step 2: Reopen Malwarebytes.

Check to see if the problem is solved now. If not, try the following methods.

Method 3: Update Malwarebytes to the Latest Version

Some versions of Malwarebytes have been plagued by this specific problem, but the developer has quickly released updates that almost guarantee solutions immediately. Thus, you can try updating Malwarebytes to the latest version. Here is how to do this:

Step 1: When there is a new version of the tool available online, Malwarebytes will display a popup message. If you have received it, you can click Download and Install and skip over to step 4.

Step 2: If you haven’t received this notification, you can check for updates manually.

Step 3: Open Malwarebytes and navigate to the Application tab in Settings. Under the Application Updates section, click Install Application Updates.

Step 4: Then you will see a message saying there are no updates available or a message saying Progress: Updates successfully downloaded. You need to click OK and when you are prompted to install updates immediately, click Yes.

Then you just need to follow the on-screen instructions to complete the updating process and see if the “Malwarebytes Web Protection won’t turn on” problem still appears.

Method 4: Uninstall the Driver for MBAM Web Protection

This method is to uninstall the diver for MBAM Web Protection. It may be helpful for you to fix the issue. You can follow the steps below:

Step 3: Input the following command and press Enter: sc delete mbamwebprotection.

Step 4: Restart your computer and open Malwarebytes again in the same manner as you did in step 1.

Step 5: Navigate to the Protection tab in Settings and check under the Real-Time Protection section for Web Protection.

If the issue still exists you should move on to the next part.

Method 5: Add Some Files and Folders to the Exceptions List in Your Antivirus Tools

If you use both Malwarebytes and other antivirus tools, it may cause Malwarebytes Web Protection won’t start. Although Malwarebytes often advertises that it can be used to work alongside any antivirus tool, the fact is not. Thus, you need to add some files and folders to the exceptions list in your antivirus tools to fix the issue. Here are the steps:

Step 1: In the Start menu, search for the antivirus tool you use and double-click the antivirus icon to enter the user interface.

Step 2: The exceptions setting is in a different location for the different antivirus tools. Here, I take Avast as an example, the following is the path of Avast’s exceptions list: Home > Settings > General > Exclusions.

Here is a list of files and folders you need to add to exceptions list:

Files:

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\assistant.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\malwarebytes_assistant.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMService.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbamtray.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MbamPt.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMWsc.exe

C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\farflt.sys

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbae64.sys

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\MBAMSwissArmy.sys

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mwac.sys

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\MBAMChameleon.sys

Folders:

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware

C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService

Then you can check if the “Malwarebytes real-time Web Protection won’t t turn on” issue still exists, if yes, you should move on to the next method.

Method 6: Reset the MBAM Service

If Malwarebytes Web Protection keeps turning off, it may be caused by the corrupt MBAM Service.exe file. When this file is corrupt, the symptoms are increased RAM and increased CPU usage. Here is the tutorial to reset the MBAM Service:

Step 2: Then click the Processes tab and navigate to the MBAM Service.exe entry displayed on the list. If you see multiple entries, right-click them and click the End task option.

Step 3: When the warning message pops up, you just need to click Yes.

Step 4: After that, click File and choose Run new task. Type MBAMService.exe and click OK in the Create new task window.

Then you should restart your computer and check if the “Malwarebytes Web Protection won’t start” issue has been fixed.
